Whether you are getting ready for your first winter of backcountry skiing and riding or you’ve been at it for years, the Avalanche Skills Training (AST) Level 1 or 2 course - developed by the Canadian Avalanche Centre - is the perfect opportunity to learn about (or brush up on) safe backcountry travel techniques, route finding, slope assessment and companion rescue. Join us for a weekend of snowcat assisted ski touring and avalanche skills training. Our AST courses are taught by Keith Robine, a professional member of the Canadian Avalanche Association with 18 years of experience teaching avalanche courses to recreational skiers and riders. Field sessions include some cat-assisted ski touring sessions at Big Red Cats, no lift passes required. The AST2 course includes an extra field day and goes into more detail on snow science and decision-making in the backcountry. It is expected that this course will become the future prerequisite fof the CAA Level 1 operations course. Previous experience in the backcountry and some avalanche knowledge a prerequisite.
