Personal Check List:
Item:
Why:
1. Travel Insurance (should include Trip Cancellation insurance):
This protects you against costs like: medical costs, cancellation of trips, theft or loss of equipment etc.
Big Red Cats strongly recommends to all guests that they purchase travel insurance.
Try www.sandersontravelinsurance.com or www.worldnomads.com as they both cover catskiing.
2. Evacuation Insurance (often covered in travel insurance)
Make sure that your insurer will pay the cost of helicopter evacuation if nessesary. Costs of this type of evac is normally at least C$2000 per hour, and while BC Ambulance will often cover it, you just can’t be sure.
Try www.sandersontravelinsurance.com or www.worldnomads.com as they both cover catskiing.
3. Fitness – do some pre-ski fitness preparation
This will help you to enjoy the day that much more and will make it that much safer for you.
4. Waiver
Read the waiver before coming – get legal advice on it if you like. Please be aware that in signing the waiver you are giving up your legal right to sue and you are accepting the high level of risk involved in backcountry skiing.
5.Skis and poles
Let us know if you would like to rent fat powder skis. If you would like to use our new Rossignol B-Squads the cost is C$30 per day. If you do not book them in advance, there is no guarantee that we will have enough skis, and you’ll be stuck with the old ones. They may also be used during your time at the ski hill if available. If you want skis fitted, drop off a ski boot in the vestibule of the Red Shutter Inn before going to the morning briefing. Please bring your poles as you will need them.
6. Goggles and Eyeware
We always recommend goggles over glasses as they work better and protect your eyes from hazards such as tree branches. Also, we recommend that you bring 2 pairs of goggles. This helps when you fall as you can replace wet foggy goggles with a dry pair. We have good goggles available for purchase in the cat.
7. Food
Let us know at least a week in advance if you have any special dietary needs and we will do our best to alter your lunch order. Make sure that you have good breakfast before your ski day.
8. Transfers – travelling
Call us a few days before if you need collection at Castlegar airport, even if it has been pre-arranged with us.
9. Luggage
Ski boots – if flying in and wanting to ski with us the next day, it is best to carry ski boots in carry-on luggage. If the airline misplaces your luggage, we can provide everything else if necessary, but ski boots are hard to replace before 7:30am.
10. Photos
We will post low-resolution photos on our website at the end of each day for free. If you would like professional photography let us know a week or 2 in advance and we will make this happen (cost is dependant on your requirements)
