Meet the Team

Big Red Cats, like most mechanized ski operations in B.C., operates on Crown Land and therefore is obligated to carry liability insurance.  As part of this, you can be assured that Big Red Cats always has qualified guides, as determined by WorkSafeBC, the CAA, and their guiding organisation.  Supervisors have either ACMG ski guide, CSGA3, or foreign equivalent.  Guides leading cats are at least CSGA2 or ACMG assistant guides, and tail guides typically have at least their CSGA1 designation, or at minimum, their CAA1, 80-hour first aid, and are training for their CSGA1.  On any given day, many of the guides will actually be overqualified for the position which they are guiding.   All guides have current first aid qualifications and many are also ski instructors.

Kieren Gaul at Big Red Cat Skiing

Kieren Gaul - Owner  - Lead Guide

  • CSGA 3, CAA 2, CSIA 2, 80-hour first aid, Professional Member of the CAA

Kieren created this job so that he could powder ski every day with people like you. He truly has a passion for sharing some of the best skiing in the world with our guests, so in 2004 he left a finance job in Sydney in order to start Big Red Cats.

Every summer since then, he's been roaming his mountains wielding a chainsaw, creating more ski runs and optimizing the cat road network, and every winter, he's been guiding, so he knows those 8 mountains better than anyone else on the planet.

Paula Skinner Gaul

As co-owner of BRC, she mans the headquarters, and does most of the administration.

Paula is a graduate of the Royal Military College of Canada, has an MBA from the Ivey School of Business, and was a consultant for Boston Consulting Group in Sydney when she and Kieren decided to start their own business.  Sammie was born in 2001, Gaby in 2003, Big Red Cats in 2004, and Freesia in 2005 - now all of them have completed their formative years, and she is determined to get out of the office more often to ski with you.

Paula is also a realtor with Century 21, so if you decide to buy any condos at Red, make sure to talk to her about it, because her real estate clients get a free day of cat skiing!
